Creating bootable USB disk with Windows 10 WinPE and DiskCryptor
« on: November 25, 2015, 12:17:58 am »
I couldn't find a better place to post this to, but would probably be good if someone updated the Wiki with this information

Made with Windows 10 in mind, but should work with minor changes for Windows 8 and 8.1 as well.

Install DiskCryptor on the machine you'll want to create the WinPE image on.

Download the Windows 10 ADK setup from https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/hardware/dn913721.aspx and install the "Deployment Tools" and "Windows Preinstallation Environment (Windows PE)" -components with it.

Create dcrypt.reg file with the contents (e.g. on your desktop):

Code: [Select]
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\WinPE\ControlSet001\Services\dcrypt]
"Type"=dword:00000001
"Start"=dword:00000000
"ErrorControl"=dword:00000003
"ImagePath"=hex(2):73,00,79,00,73,00,74,00,65,00,6d,00,33,00,32,00,5c,00,64,00,\
  72,00,69,00,76,00,65,00,72,00,73,00,5c,00,64,00,63,00,72,00,79,00,70,00,74,\
  00,2e,00,73,00,79,00,73,00,00,00
"Group"="Filter"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\WinPE\ControlSet001\Services\dcrypt\config]
"Flags"=dword:00000082
"Hotkeys"=hex:00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00
"sysBuild"=dword:00000000

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\WinPE\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}]
"UpperFilters"=hex(7):64,00,63,00,72,00,79,00,70,00,74,00,00,00,00,00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\WinPE\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{71A27CDD-812A-11D0-BEC7-08002BE2092F}]
"LowerFilters"=hex(7):64,00,63,00,72,00,79,00,70,00,74,00,00,00,66,00,76,00,65,\
  00,76,00,6f,00,6c,00,00,00,00,00

Run Deploying and Imaging Tools Environment as an administrator, you'll find it in your start menu.

Run the following commands to mount the WinPE -image to C:\winpe-servicing:

Code: [Select]
cd C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits\10\Assessment and Deployment Kit\Windows Preinstallation Environment\amd64\en-us
mkdir c:\winpe-servicing
dism /mount-wim /wimfile:winpe.wim /mountdir:c:\winpe-servicing /index:1

Now don't close the terminal yet, but open up Registry Editor (regedit.exe).

Select HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, then open up the menu item File -> Load Hive..., and point it to C:\winpe-servicing\windows\system32\config\SYSTEM and when asked give it the name WinPE.
Double-click on the dcrypt.reg file created earlier, and accept the changes.
Go back to Registry Editor, select the WinPE -item under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and go to File -> Unload Hive... and exit the Registry Editor.
Go to your existing DiskCryptor installation (C:\Program Files\dcrypt) and copy the folder contents to C:\winpe-servicing\Program Files\dcrypt
Also copy the dcrypt.sys file to c:\winpe-servicing\Windows\System32\Drivers
Make sure you close any explorer windows or command prompt windows you might have browsing the c:\winpe-servicing -directory or any of it's subdirectories.
Go back to the elevated command prompt and run:

Code: [Select]
dism /unmount-image /mountdir:c:\winpe-servicing /commit
If you get ANY errors during this point you failed with one or more of the above and you'll have to do it again, try very carefully following every instruction.

Now to make the WinPE USB stick. Insert your USB stick, make sure you know it's drive letter. In this example it is G:

Code: [Select]
CopyPE amd64 c:\WinPE_amd64
MakeWinPEMedia /UFD C:\WinPE_amd64 G:

That's it! If you need more files (e.g. the backup header) you can place them on the root of the USB stick and they'll be available in D: in the WinPE environment.

When you boot the USB stick you'll see a command prompt with winpeinit running, just wait until that finishes and then run (the keyboard layout might not be what you expect):

Code: [Select]
cd ..
cd ..
cd program files
cd dcrypt
dcrypt

lietu, I am having difficulty following the instructions.  I have created a new folder on the desktop named decrypt.reg, but I don't understand what content I am supposed to put in this folder.

Yes you are:
Create dcrypt.reg file...

I strongly recommend you read about basic OS terminology like folder, file. Then about Windows Registry, registry files before proceeding any further.
If you can't\won't, it's better if you use a "ready to go" Live Media, you can find links to them here:

Anfinuo, I am aware of the difference between a folder and a file.  I didn't need a lecture, I needed help.  Where should the "Create dcrypt.reg file" be done?

Apparently not.

I didn't need a lecture, I needed help.
I would say both, and both you received.

Where should the "Create dcrypt.reg file" be done?
If you're asking what to use to create that file, the answer is whatever works for you. I prefer Notepad2, but creating it via "RMB" -> "New" -> "Text Document", and editing it with build-in Notepad should work too. Just remember to change extension.

If you're asking about placing of the said file, and it's contents, lietu wrote that already.

P.S.
I think this discussion is better suited for "troubleshooting" subforum.

Thanks Lietu, follow your tutorial and worked like a charm with Windows Server 2012 R2 too. This is NOT for computer beginners, you are better off using a ready made PE ISO.

Just to show you that it works, I´ve booted the created ISO in Virtual Box (following his steps 100%), here is a screenshot, working like a charm:

P.S.: Instead of "C:" you should use "X:", it just worked for "C:" for me in that case since I had DriveCrypt installed on C: as well previously. But in a standard case with non accessible HD, you would use X: as DriveCrypt is already integrated in the image.
